Research Projects

Read on to find out about the research projects our group is involved in!

At UNH:

  • Tensor Polarized Target
Our group collaborates closely with Karl Slifer and Elena Long's research groups to support ongoing research into improving methods for tensor spin polarization of deuteron targets. These targets will be used on a series of experiments described below which will run at Jefferson Lab to enhance our understanding of the nature of matter.

Current Experiments and Projects:

  • EMC Experiment
    Jefferson Lab E12-10-008
Recently completed at Jefferson Lab, this experiment is an inclusive, inelastic measurement of the well known EMC effect, with a range of light to medium heavy nuclei targets. Our graduate student Zoe Wolters is hard at work on the analysis of the recently collected data!

  • SRC Experiment
    Jefferson Lab E12-06-105
Alongside the EMC experiment above, the SRC experiment also recently finished collecting data at Jefferson Lab on the Short-Range Correlations of the nucleon -- studying this effect is vital to understanding nuclear mechanisms for how protons and neutrons correlate together. The data is currently under analysis!

  • ePIC Detector Far-Forward Region
    Brookhaven National Laboratory Electron-Ion Collider
The Electron-Ion Collider under construction at Brookhaven National Laboratory promises to be a next-generation machine which will enable a new era of nuclear physics experiments. Our group is involved in a project in collaboration with Alex Jentsch of BNL to develop a modern reconstruction algorithm with machine-learning techniques for the Roman Pots and OMD detectors in the Far-Forward region.

Upcoming Experiments:

  • Tensor Program
    Jefferson Lab - est. 2027
Our lab plans to play an important role in the b1 (E12-13-011) and Azz (E12-15-005) experiments at Jefferson Lab, which have been recently fully approved. To this end we are engaged in close collaboration with the Slifer and Long Labs at UNH to help develop a tensor-polarized target and prepare for this groundbreaking program of experiments.

  • Mid-Q2 g2p Experiment
Jefferson Lab - Proposal in Preparation
We are in the process of preparing a proposal for a new measurement of the g2 structure function of the proton. If approved, this experiment will provide missing information on the internal structure of ordinary matter's most prevalent particle!
